Ingrown hairs: causes, solutions and prevention

Ingrown hairs are one of the most bothersome issues in skin care. The reddish, often painful swelling that appears after shaving or waxing is not just a cosmetic problem: it can develop into folliculitis, leave scars and compromise skin health.

If you are looking for an approach that goes beyond temporary remedies, this article covers causes, effective solutions and how to address the problem in a lasting way.

What are ingrown hairs

An ingrown hair forms when the hair, instead of emerging from the follicle, bends or grows under the skin surface. The body recognises it as a foreign body and reacts with inflammation, which shows as redness, tenderness and sometimes pus.

The phenomenon mainly affects those with curly or thick hair but can occur on any phototype and in different body areas.

Main causes

Aggressive removal methods (shaving, waxing, tweezing), dry or keratinised skin, and constitutional factors (curly hair, thick hair, darker phototypes) all contribute.

Lasting solution: laser hair removal

To durably reduce ingrown hairs you need to act on hair growth. Laser hair removal acts on the follicle and reduces regrowth, limiting ingrown hairs. After the first 2–3 laser sessions, many notice a clear reduction in folliculitis; once the cycle is complete (typically 6–10 sessions), the problem is resolved in most treated areas.

Bespoke method for sensitive skin

Prevention

Correct shaving technique, regular gentle exfoliation, daily hydration and avoiding overly tight clothing help limit ingrown hairs when laser is not chosen yet.
